45 anglers converged at the township of Nelson in the 14th and final round of the Ford Ranger BREAM Qualifying Series on the Glenelg River. With the final 4 boater and non boater spots up for grabs in the Grand Final to be held on Sydney Harbour, anglers were keen to perform and cement their place.
Winning the event was Dan Mackerell, a 27 year old forestry worker from Colac with a 7/10, 3.77kg limit. Mackerell who normally fishes the Vic BREAM Classic events with Steve Parker, made the late decision to borrow a boat and make the switch to a boater. The end result saw Dan getting his maiden victory and announcing his presence on the ABT scene.
Using a G.Loomis DSR820S rod matched to a Daiwa SOL 2500 spooled with 3lb Berkley Crystal Fireline and 6lb Sunline FC Rock leader, Mackerell employed a 3 lure pronged attack.
Sitting on a 4-5 metre dropoff with a heavy shell bottom, he would alternate between a Bassday Kangoku shad in dark mat brown, a 1/8th oz TT Switchblade in midnight red, and an Ecogear VX40 in black/orange.
“It was important to get the lure near the bottom. I would give it a few short hops and a 3-4 second pause. The fish would eat the lure once paused,” Mackerell explained.
With plenty of fresh water in the system due to recent heavy rains, Dan’s spot around the poles near the mouth of the river saw plenty of anglers and fish.
“The first 3 hours both days were productive. I also caught 3 or 4 jew as well,” he said.
Continuing on his good form this year was runner up Spiro Spyropolous with a 5/10, 3.12kg tournament limit. Picking up a sponsorship agreement with Smith lures since his Derwent victory, Spiro used a Smith Dancing Bream 7’2” rod and Daiwa Exist 2506 spooled with Varivas .8 PE and Varivas 4lb Light Game Mebaru fluorocarbon.
His spot for the weekend was the left hand bank at the start of the ski zone, where he found the bream close to the bank on Saturday in 1m of water, then deeper on Sunday in approximately 7-8 feet.
“I used my sounder to see where the saltwater underneath the fresh would meet and honed in on that area,” said Spiro.
Using a 35mm Smith Sea Bullet blade in gold/orange belly he also used a similar technique to Mackerell with short hops off the bottom and the fish taking the lure on the pause.
Stephen Duff claimed the $500 Go-So Big Bream with his 1.08kg specimen. The fish falling to an Ecogear VX40 in colour 439 and caught on the flats down the front in the shallows whilst ripping the lure on one of his new rods, the Custom Fishing Tool TTB61015.
Winning his first ‘bream on a stick’, the name given to the Lowrance AOY trophy was Brad Hodges who claimed the Victoria trophy courtesy of his third placing at Glenelg and his victory at Mallacoota in June.
ABT would like to thank the Nelson Hotel and local community for supporting the event and the Hobie Kayakers who also took part in the enjoyable tournament weekend on the Glenelg River.
Attention now turns to the final event of the season with the Ford Ranger BREAM Grand Final heading to Sydney Harbour on the last weekend in October. Being staged on Darling Harbour the pinnacle event of the season is sure see to draw attention from around the country to see who is crowned the champion for 2009.
